Root Canal Therapy
Over the years the procedure known as a root canal, has taken on a bad reputation. Patients associate root canals with extreme pain, but this is a misunderstanding. The procedure is not the painful part, the pain already exists due to the infection present in the inside portion of the tooth.
How do I know I need a root canal?
We get asked this question often and we tell our patients that if you experience tooth pain, sensitivity, problems chewing, darkening of the tooth, or you see a bump on your gums then there may be an infection. Infection can be caused by a deep cavity, injury to a tooth, crack or chip in the tooth, or multiple dental procedures performed on one tooth.
What happens if I need a root canal?
The first step is to remove the infected pulp. Then we clean out the inside of the canal, and fill it with a medicated rubber material to alleviate the pain and heal the infection. The area is sealed, and you are released. Then you will come back into our office and we will place a dental crown on the now weakened tooth to protect and restore it to full function. You may experience a slight difference from your other teeth for some time after your root canal is completed. However, if you have severe pain or pressure, or pain that lasts more than a few days, call our office.
A tooth extraction is the procedure done to remove a tooth from its socket in the jawbone that is damaged beyond repair. It is important to know that we have your best interest at heart so if we feel that an oral surgeon is better suited for your particular extraction, we will refer you to one.
Why are teeth extracted?
There are many reason why a tooth may need to be extracted and some of the most common reasons are below:
- A severely decayed tooth
- Gum/bone disease
- A fractured tooth that is impossible or impractical to repair
- An impacted wisdom teeth
- Non-functional or poorly functional teeth
